Before you start
J is made at the front of the mouth, not in the throat.
Start from ch: ch, ch, ch.
Hand on the throat and turn the voice on. It becomes j.
Switch: ch, j, ch, j. Only the buzz changes. Jump, jump!
One
4 steps. Listen to them, or use the arrows to go at your own pace.
The tongue rises and closes
Just like CH: against the roof of the mouth, behind the bump.
The soft palate closes the nose
The air builds up for an instant.
It lets go and hushes out
A tap, then a hush, just like CH.
But the throat buzzes
That buzz turns CH into J. It's made at the front, not in the throat.
Two
The same mouth, syllable by syllable and up close: this is the model they'll copy in the mirror.
